Wimbledon is all about the best of the tennis best playing for the most important title of the year. But as far as online gambling bets go, Roger Federer can't lose. The biggest tennis championship of 2006 is already drawing massive crowds, despite some of the matches being called off for rain. And the competition is drawing equal amounts of interest at online sportsbetting site Sportsbook.com, where punters are betting in droves that Federer will win his fourth Wimbledon title in a row. Federer is an easy favorite at some decent odds: 3 to 1 at the moment. Maria Sharapova is the hot women's tennis favorite at odds of 5:2, even though she's only fourth seeded and went down in flames last year to female tennis sensation Venus Williams. Some die-hard patriots don't care what Federer's chances of winning the tournament are - they're backing the US hopeful Andy Roddick with everything they've got at Sportsbook.com, at odds of 6:1. Roddick and Federer have gone head to head before in the last two Wimbledon tennis finals but Roddick got thrashed by the Swiss sportsman, who only lost a single set to poor Andy. But maybe this year will be different. Even if Roddick doesn't make it home a winner, Americans can still root for James Blake (at 20:1 odds) and crowd-pleasing superstar Andre Agassi (60:1) to do them proud. Venus will be back again to work her on-court magic and represents the only hope the USA has of scoring a female champion this year, after Serena Williams, Jennifer Capriati and Lindsay Davenport exited the competition early after suffering injuries. Hot on Venus's heels are Kim Clijsters (at odds of 11:2) and Justine Henin-Hardenne (at 9:2) - and Sharapova of course, who Sportsbook.com bettors are convinced will be packing the Wimbledon trophy into her togbag at the end of the last set in the final match. But just because the big money is going one way, doesn't mean the actual results won't go in another direction. Outsiders Lleyton Hewitt (at 12:1) and Rafael Nadal (at 15:1) could also up their game to steal the limelight unexpectedly. Martina Hingis (at 9:1) is playing for the first time since 2001 and Amelie Mauresmo (at 7:1) is always capable of pulling a rabbit out of the hat when she needs to, which might be enough to score the big one for the first time in her tennis career. Lots of action on-court and even more online at Sportsbook.com. Enjoy the games - and good luck! |
